The cold and frosty season has descended upon us. It is that dreaded time of year when nobody particularly enjoys waking up for early starts and dragging themselves away from their toasty warm duvet.
Now we are heading into November, you may have to swap your current duvet which lasted you through a confusing British heatwave, for a new duvet which will keep you insulated this winter.
Your duvet plays an essential role in your sleeping experience, as it determines how warm you are going to be when winter rolls around. So you need to choose a duvet which meets your needs.
But which tog duvet should you go for? If you are wondering what the answer is to the question ‘13.5 Tog or 15 Tog?’, then look no further. We have outlined below the benefits of both tog ratings, which will help you decide which duvet is perfect for this winter.
Read our article on ‘what kind of duvet is best for winter’ to find out more information on how to choose the right duvet for you.
If you didn’t already know, the tog rating refers to the measure of the thermal insulation of a duvet, which tells you how effectively the duvet keeps you warm. Essentially, the tog rating measures the duvet’s ability to trap warm air. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet is. The tog rating scale goes from 1.5 to 16.5.
The good news is that both 13.5 tog or 15 tog duvets are both absolutely fantastic for winter, so it’s really a win-win, regardless of which tog rating you go for. A winter duvet with a score of 13.5 or 15 togs will stay warm for at least 30 minutes after you get out of bed.
So, you can’t go wrong, whichever side of the duvet debate you fall on!

Choosing a 13.5 Tog duvet
A 13.5 tog duvet has a lower tog rating than a 15 tog duvet. So, the 13.5 tog is not as warm as the 15 tog duvet.
However, that does not mean that a 13.5 tog duvet is not a good duvet for winter.
On the contrary, both 13.5 tog or 15 tog duvets are suitable for winter and will still keep you warm in the comfort of your bed. It is an excellent choice for a winter duvet, as it will keep you much warmer than a duvet measuring between 1.5 to 4.5 tog, which is ideal for the summer months.
A 13.5 tog duvet has the advantage of keeping you lovely and warm during the winter, without the risk of causing you to overheat. It is far more lightweight and breathable than a 15 tog duvet, so it will keep you cool, meaning you can sleep comfortably.
If you have a 13.5 tog duvet, but you still feel a little bit chilly at night time, simply place an extra blanket on top, which can be easily removed if you do not need it. This is perfect for elderly people, who may become distressed and agitated with temperature fluctuations.
There you have it, a 13.5 tog duvet will help you regulate your body temperature, making it a lovely duvet choice for this winter.
Choosing a 15 Tog duvet
A 15 tog duvet is the warmest duvet available on the market. They will keep you super warm and insulated, which is perfect for battling those cold winter nights. This makes it an ideal duvet choice for people who wish to insulate themselves as much as possible, so their bodies can cope with this cosy layer of heat.
A 15 tog duvet is also ideal for people that live in older properties, where the insulation is poorer. This could be because of ageing windows, older central heating systems, or gaps in the foundation, walls, attic, chimney or lighting fixtures. These gaps are all openings which create pathways for air to travel to, which is like having a window wide open in your house, 24 hours a day. So, when deciding between 13.5 tog or 15 tog duvets, remember the 15 tog duvet will keep you comfortable from even the coldest of drafts.
However, 15 tog duvets may not be suitable for everyone. If you experience hot flashes or night sweats at night time, or if you share a bed with a partner who is prone to hot flashes or night sweats, then a 15 tog duty may be too heavy duty for you. Even during those cold nights, your body still has to keep cool, so that you do not overheat.
How to decide between 13.5 tog or 15 tog
To choose between a 13.5 tog or 15 togs you must choose your comfort level. Think about your sleeping patterns and understand what your desired body warmth is. If you share a bed with a partner, remember that both your bodies will emit heat. A really heavy-duty duvet may be too hot, making you both feel restless and unable to nod off. So, a lower tog rating will be more cooling and comfortable for both partners.
Do you want to feel really snug and warm at night time, trapping hot air to the maximum? Are you a cool sleeper, and can your body withstand really warm temperatures without any issues? If you answered yes to these questions, opt for a 15 tog duvet.
Alternatively, if you overheat easily in warmth and you prefer a duvet which is lighter, choose a 13.5 tog duvet. This is the ideal duvet if you experience hot and cold spells at night time.
What is the best duvet tog for a child?
Children over 3 should have a duvet with a tog rating of 4.5 or less. Young kids need a light duvet because they cannot regulate their body temperature.
A hypoallergenic duvet is a wonderful option for children, to prevent dust mites, bacteria and mould from entering their systems and help relieve them of sniffles and allergies.
Choose a duvet that is machine washable, as this will come in handy in case of spillages or leaks.
A mattress protector is also a good idea, to add a layer of protection to the mattress.
Do babies need a duvet when they are sleeping?
Absolutely not. Never use a duvet or pillows for babies under the age of 12 months. Thick bedding puts babies in danger of suffocation: if a baby’s face gets covered, he or she cannot push the duvet away.
Generally, toddlers move from a cot to a bed when they are between 18 months and 3 years old. When your toddler transitions to sleeping in a bed, the bed should be safe and comfortable. The toddler can sleep with a small pillow and thin blanket, but remove any stuffed toys or toys with ribbons or strings, which could suffocate or strangle the child.

How do I know if my baby is too hot while sleeping?
Babies can overheat if they are wearing too many layers of clothing, if the room temperature is too hot, or if they are under a heavy blanket.
Look out for the following signs if your baby becomes too hot or uncomfortable while he or she is sleeping:
- Baby’s skin will feel hot, clammy or sweaty
- Baby’s skin is flushed, red or blotchy
- Baby is breathing rapidly or has a quickened pulse
- Baby is dizzy, sluggish, lethargic, confused or unresponsive
- Baby is fussy or irritable
- Baby is nauseous or vomiting
To help your baby if he or she becomes too hot:
- Remove layers of clothing
- Lower the room temperature to below 23.8 Degrees Celcius
- Move the baby’s sleep space to a cooler spot in the house
- Keep the baby out of direct sunlight
- If the house is too hot, take your baby outdoors or to an air-conditioned venue, which will cool the baby down
